Keeping Your Equipment Safe

Industrial chemicals do their work inside pumps, pipework, tanks and reactors that were specified for a particular duty. When a substitution is made without checking compatibility — a stronger acid, a different solvent, a higher operating temperature — the damage rarely shows up on the first shift. It shows up weeks later as a seal that has swelled, a gasket that has gone brittle, or a vessel wall that has thinned.

Start with the safety data sheet for every material you bring on site, and read the materials-of-construction section alongside the hazard section. Elastomers are the usual weak point: nitrile, EPDM and PTFE behave very differently against solvents, oxidisers and concentrated acids. Where a chemical is being introduced for the first time, confirm the wetted parts before the first drum is opened, not after.

Storage matters as much as use. Keep containers closed and clearly labelled, store oxidising agents away from organics and fuels, and keep acids and alkalis separated with proper bunding. Ventilation is not optional for volatile solvents, and a cool, dry store extends the usable life of hygroscopic materials such as caustic flakes and calcium chloride.

Finally, treat decanting and dosing as engineering tasks rather than routine chores. Dedicated pumps and lines for aggressive chemicals prevent cross-contamination, dosing points sized to the duty prevent shock loading, and a rinse-down procedure after each transfer stops residues from attacking equipment overnight.
